Uniform Handbook

It is the desire of the College to honour and bring glory to God. We believe that we can contribute to this in our personal presentation, dress and behaviour. Students wear uniforms to build unity and to identify themselves with the College. The College uniform also assists with issues of personal safety, peer group pressure, social background and even job preparation, since many workplaces require employees to abide by dress regulations.

Students are required to wear their uniform to and from the College each day, at College and to all College excursions and functions unless otherwise advised.

Students are required to wear the complete College uniform without any additions (e.g. non-uniform items, jewellery, etc.) both at College and when in public such as when travelling to and from College or in public places.

Your child’s uniform should be in good repair, clean and presentable at all times. (Black leather lace-up school shoes should also be regularly polished.)

We believe that it is important that parents/guardians support the College in ensuring that their child’s uniform is always complete, clean and worn with pride. This support will allow us to focus on the importance of providing students with a quality education and not spend time dealing with uniform issues.

We understand that there are times when an incomplete uniform must be worn to school. We require that a note of explanation is provided at those times. Students who choose to present themselves outside of the College standard will be disciplined. In the worst case scenario students may be sent home until the matter is resolved.

In order to maintain the quality standards, design and colour of our College Uniform, please be aware that all items must only be purchased through the Uniform Shop.

Trading Hours

The Uniform Shop is open in terms 1 and 4 on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:00am and again from 1:00pm until 4:00pm. In terms 2 and 3 the opening hours are Mondays and Thursdays from 8:30am until 1:30pm only. The Uniform Shop does not open on public and school holidays unless otherwise advertised.

If you wish to order uniforms outside of these hours, you may do so by completing an order form, available from the Parent Services/Reception office, or downloaded from our College website. Completed order forms (including your cash or cheque payment) can be returned to Parent Services in an envelope marked “Uniform Shop” (unfortunately EFTPOS and over-the-phone credit card payments are only able to be processed by the Uniform Shop during trading hours only). Alternatively, you may choose to place and pay for your order via the website www.schoolshoponline.net.au. Your order will then be processed and receipted on the next trading day. Please note that uniforms may only be issued after full payment has been received. Completed uniform orders will be sent to the student’s form room unless you have made prior collection arrangements with the Uniform Shop.

Payment Methods

The Uniform Shop is able to process orders using cash, cheque, EFTPOS and credit card facilities.

Ordering Uniforms

During Term 1 and Term 4, the Uniform Shop Manager sends out notices relating to ordering seasonal winter and summer uniforms. These notices are sent home with each student, placed on the Schoolzine website, and included in the College Newsletter.

A $50 deposit is required to place an order. When your order has been filled, layby dockets will be sent to the student’s form room (usually the oldest student in the family). This docket is your notification that your uniform order is ready for payment and collection. Items ordered, but not currently in stock, will be placed on “Back Order” and clearly marked on your layby docket. All “paid in advance” orders will be sent to the student’s Form room upon delivery from the manufacturer.

Late Fees

Placing orders, within the stipulated time assists us in ordering sufficient quantities of stock. Please note: Due to additional costs associated with re-ordering from suppliers, orders received after the closing date indicated on the notice will be charged a late fee of 5% of the total order.

Green “Incorrect Uniform Permission Slip”

If the Uniform Shop is temporarily unable to supply a required uniform item, the Uniform Shop Manager will provide a green "Incorrect Uniform Permission Slip" for your child. The slip is required to be attached to their Student Diary. The permission slip excuses the student from wearing that particular uniform item until the expected delivery date from the supplier.

Layby Service

The Uniform Shop offers a layby service to parents with the following conditions:

  • Only available for orders over $200.00.
  • A deposit of $50 or 25% (whichever is greater) of the total is required.
  • Laybys are held for a period of 8 weeks (except during seasonal ordering times which have a specific collection date). Regular, fortnightly payments are required to be made over this period. Please note: If a layby is not finalised by the end of 8 weeks, the uniform items will be returned to stock and the deposit paid will be held as a 'credit note', to be used towards future purchases for the respective family.

Second Hand Uniform Items

For a variety of reasons, the Uniform Shop no longer sells second-hand items on behalf of College families. Second-hand uniforms may be bought and sold directly from parent-to-parent via the Sustainable School Shop (www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au) on our College website. Second-hand textbooks are also available from this link.

UNCLAIMED/UNLABELLED “LOST PROPERTY” UNIFORM ITEMS

At the end of each school term, the Lost Property collection will be categorized. Any unlabelled uniforms will be re-claimed by the Uniform Shop to be donated to needy families. Any uniforms that do not meet College standards, will be donated to an approved mission supported by members of Thornlie Church of Christ or to Clutterbugs (a fabric recycling business). To avoid your valuable items being donated to other families, please label all uniform items with your child’s first initial and FULL SURNAME so that they can be returned to your child if found.

UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS

Please find below an outline of the College Uniform requirements relating to both the uniform and appearance of our students.

LOGOS

The College logos are incorporated into all uniform items purchased through the Uniform Shop.

LABELLING

All property brought to the College should be clearly marked with the owner’s name. It is recommended to label your child’s initial and surname on a portion of fabric not visible from the outside of their uniform. Manufacturer’s tags/labels are often removed and the identity of the item is lost. Parents are required to check their children’s clothing regularly to ensure that the labels can be clearly read and to ensure that another student’s property has not beenaccidentally brought home. Unclaimed uniforms are placed in the Lost Property Box which is kept in the Student Services office. We endeavour to return labelled items to owners. Any unlabelled uniform items will be re-claimed by the Uniform Shop to be donated to needy families.

HAIR

BOYS

  • Boy's hair should be no longer than collar-length and neatly groomed at all times.
  • Boy's hair should be groomed so as not to fall across the eyes.
  • Severe undercuts and razor cuts are not permitted.
  • Boy's hair should be no shorter than a number 2 blade. The rule of thumb is that the scalp should not be easily visible through the hair.
  • Facial hair is not permitted. Boys should keep sideburns short - no longer than mid-ear.

GIRLS

  • Girls with shoulder length or longer hair should wear it back neatly off of the face at all times. Shorter hair should be groomed so as not to fall across the eyes.
  • Hair accessories should be functional for the purpose of holding the hair in place rather than ornamental. Hair accessories may only be Royal blue or Navy blue in colour.

ALL STUDENTS

  • Extremes in hairstyles and hair colour are not permitted. Hairstyles should be neat and reflect generally accepted standards in the community.
  • Hair colour is not to be changed so that it is noticeably different to natural colouring.

MAKE-UP

Students from Kindergarten to Year 9

Make-up is not to be worn with the College uniform (this includes nail polish). An exemption to this rule may be considered where, due to disfigurement such as severe acne, a student’s parents may request permission for their child to wear a light covering of powder or a natural-toned foundation.

Students from Year 10 to Year 12

It is preferred that make-up is not worn with the College uniform. However, in recognition of their seniority in the College, students may choose to wear a light covering of natural-toned powder or foundation and a very light application of mascara. Makeup should be worn in such a manner that it does not attract attention.

Students who repeatedly abuse this privilege will have the privilege removed for a period of time and will receive a Demerit for each incident.

JEWELLERY

Boys are not permitted to wear jewellery other than a watch.

Girls may wear a maximum of one stud or sleeper (gold or silver) in the lower part of the lobe in each ear. No other jewellery is to be worn other than a watch.

Please note: Medic alert bracelets do not qualify as jewellery.

Jewellery will be confiscated from students who persist in breaching the rules, placed in a secure envelope and given to Parent Services. One of the student’s parents will be required to collect confiscated items from Parent Services.

BATHERS

The College requires students in Years 4 - 12 to wear College bathers when involved in the College swimming programme. It is not compulsory for students in Years 1 - 3 to have the College bathers, therefore, a modest bather (girls) and board shorts (boys) is acceptable for these students. Students are required to have a towel and a fresh change of underwear for swimming lessons and carnivals.

Bather Requirements:

GIRLS

College bathers (years 4 - 12).

College logo girls/ladies bather shorts (optional) may be worn over the bathers for extra modesty.

BOYS

College swim shorts OR College long-leg racing shorts (years 4 - 12)

Racing briefs may be worn under the College swim shorts, but are not permitted to be worn alone.

JUMPER

The College jumper is made of quality wool and acrylic. Students who are allergic to wool are able to get an exemption from this uniform item by providing a medical certificate stating their condition.

The College jumper may be worn under the College blazer for students in Years 10 - 12.

Blazer

College blazers are compulsory for students in Years 10 - 12. The blazer is worn in Terms 2 and 3. Students will be advised if they are required to wear their College blazer to any College formal events outside of Terms 2 and 3.

TIES

College ties are compulsory for students in Years 10—12 and must be worn in

Terms 2 and 3. Students will be advised if they are required to wear their College tie to any College formal events outside of Terms 2 and 3. Girls who choose to wear the navy senior dress are exempt from wearing a tie. College ties must be worn to and from College and must always be tidy.

HEMLINES

College dresses and skirts are required to be worn to the knee. For students who are currently going through a growing phase this may mean that their uniforms may need to be altered more frequently. The standard guideline is that when the student is kneeling, the skirt must touch the floor at the front of the knee.

SHIRTS & BLOUSES

Short-sleeved shirts and blouses may be worn all year round; however, they must be tucked in to trousers or skirts during terms 2 and 3 (winter). Long-sleeved shirts and blouses are available for winter, but are not compulsory. For extra warmth during the winter terms, students may wear a white or skin-toned singlet or thermal vest under their shirt/blouse. The singlet/thermal vest must not be visible below the shirt/blouse, past the length of the sleeve or in the neck-V.

HATS

The College has a “no hat, no play” policy which is in effect during terms 1 & 4 for Middle and Senior school students and all year round for Primary school students. All students are required to have a College hat and parents/guardians are requested to ensure that their child brings it to school as required. Non-uniform hats and caps are not permitted. Hats should be clearly labelled and may be left in the classroom at the end of the day to ensure it is at school with your child each day. Hats should only be worn outside.

SCARVES & BEANIES

College scarves and beanies may be worn during terms 2 and 3 only. College beanies should only be worn outside.

HOUSE/FACTION SHIRT

Students are required to wear their College faction sport polo shirt for all sporting activities and when otherwise requested to do so. Students in Kindy to Year 9 wear a College red sport polo shirt while students in Years 10-12 wear a College blue sport polo shirt. Students are identified in their houses/factions by the colours on their collar and the team’s name imprinted under the College logo.

SCHOOL SHOES

Black Leather Lace-up School Shoes with a heel are required to be worn by students in Years 1—12 with their formal uniform. Students in Years 1—6 may wear Plain Black (preferable), Navy Blue or Brown Leather School Sandals as an option during Terms 1 & 4 only.

SPORT SHOES

Sports shoes should be low-cut, light weight, predominantly white and have non-marking soles. Low-cut sport shoes allow flexibility at the ankle and reduce the chance of knee injury. To check if the sports shoe is low-cut, the anklebone should be able to be seen. Sport shoes may only be worn with the sport uniform. Shoes without a built-in arch, basketball boots, Vans™, skate shoes and volleys are not acceptable.

TRACKSUIT

During terms 2 and 3 (winter) students in Years 1—12 must wear a College Microfiber Tracksuit in its entirety (jacket and pants) on their designated sport day or when otherwise advised to do so. Different sizes of tracksuit jackets and pants may be purchased as they are sold separately. College sport shorts are to be worn under their track pants. To protect the fabric of the track pants, students are advised to remove the track pants and to do their activities in their sport shorts. After sport class, they will then be required to put their track pants back on for the rest of the day.

In Years 1-9 the tracksuit jacket may be worn OVER the school jumper during the winter terms for extra warmth. No other outer garments are allowed.

Kindy and Pre-Primary students must wear the College royal blue fleecy track pants with their red house/faction polo shirt in Terms 2 & 3 instead of their sport short. A College fleecy jumper or zip jacket completes their winter requirements.

FREE DRESS DAY

“Free Dress” days are held at various times throughout the year. A gold coin donation is paid for this privilege and this money is directed towards one of the College Mission Projects. Students are permitted to wear “Free Dress” on the designated day only. Students must adhere to the rules for free dress, which are available on our website, displayed in Form Rooms and explained to students by their Form teacher. Students choosing not to adhere to the rules will be required to be picked up by their parent and taken home to change into their College uniform.

Free Dress Day Dress Code:

Girls No midriff tops

No bare shoulders or tank tops

Skirts & shorts to be the same length as the College Sport Shorts.

Boys No singlet tops—shirts must have sleeves.

NOTES:

Motifs on clothing are to be in line with the College Ethos.

If a student chooses not to abide by the above dress code, their parents will be contacted to either take them home or bring in their College uniform to be worn for the rest of the day and the student will not be allowed to participate in the next Free Dress Day.

Students who do not pay for the privilege of wearing free dress and are not in College uniform, will be considered “out of uniform” and normal infringements will apply. Students who do not wish to participate in the Free Dress Day must wear College uniforms to school.

NON-UNIFORM ITEMS

No non-uniform items may be worn with the College uniform.

EXCEPTIONS

Year 12 students are permitted to wear their “Leaver’s Jacket” in terms 3 & 4 instead of their blazer or tracksuit jacket. Other groups within the College have their own approved uniforms identifying their purpose/role that they will fulfil for or on behalf of the College including;-

the College Sound Team

Specialist sporting teams (football, netball and cheerleading teams with College provided uniform items)

Missions/outreach teams

Students going on educational tours (Sydney/Canberra, Malaysia, etc.)

Any other authorised College uniform approved by the leadership to be worn exclusively for an event or to fulfil a specific role.
